Abstract: This study systematically reviewed the pomegranate breeding work in China, including pomegranate germplasm resources, resources census and selection, seedling selection, bud mutation selection, cross breeding, introduction and domestication, mutation breeding, genetic law research, biotechnology research, etc.Over the past 40 years, domestic research scholars had breed 119 new pomegranate varieties and improved varieties, which had provided technical support for prolonging the supply period of fresh pomegranate fruits, improving the quality and innovating the cultivation mode, and strongly supporte the rapid development of China′s pomegranate industry.The breeding direction of pomegranate varieties in the future is to cultivate diversified varieties to meet the needs of different uses and different populations, and to cultivate new varieties（improved varieties） with good resistance, labor-saving cultivation and storage resistance.
