Abstract:
In order to explore the effects of river sand and bagasse above the self-draining bed on the body surface hygiene scores of Simmental cows, thirty health Simmental adult cows with similar age and birth order were selected and randomly divided into two groups, with 15 in each group. The cows were feeding in the river sand and bagasse above the self-draining bed covered with 15 cm thick, respectively. On a 4-point scale, 7 individual table parts of simmental adult cows were rated for cleanliness for 10 consecutive days, including including udder, left upper rear leg, right upper right leg, left lower rear limb, right lower rear limb, belly, and tail. The results showed that there was no significant differences in body surface hygiene scores of cows between the river sand and bagasse(P>0.05), and neither of them reached the dirtiest 4 score. Breast cleanliness scores were lowest. The proportions of 1, 2, and 3 scores were 98%, 2%, and 0 for udder, respectively. The results indicated that the self-draining bed with 15 cm thick bagasse or river sand as the surface bedding could maintain good body surface cleanliness of Simmental cows.
