Abstract:
Medium-scale beef cattle farms have gradually become the leading force in beef breeding in China because of their scale efficiency, which can reduce breeding costs and improve economic benefits. The level of management efficiency has become an important factor affecting its economic benefits. In this study, the input-output data of medium-scale beef farms in 20 provinces(autonomous regions and municipalities) in China in 2018 were selected to analyze the management efficiency of medium-scale beef farms in different provinces(autonomous regions and municipalities) and different regions by DEA method. The influencing factors of management efficiency of medium-scale beef farms were analyzed by using Tobit model. The results show that the average management efficiency of medium-scale beef farms in 20 provinces(autonomous regions and municipalities) was 0.846 in 2018;the management efficiencies of five provinces(autonomous regions and municipalities), including Xinjiang, Tianjin, Shanghai, Jiangsu and Shanxi, were 1.000.The management efficiencies of 10 provinces(autonomous regions and municipalities), including Fujian, Guizhou, Ningxia and Shaanxi, were lower than the average level. The low management efficiencies of five provinces(autonomous regions and municipalities), including Sichuan, Beijing, Shaanxi, Ningxia and Fujian, were mainly affected by the low pure technical efficiency. However, Heilongjiang, Chongqing, Henan, Guangxi and Guizhou were mainly affected by low scale efficiency. In 2018, the management efficiencies of medium-scale beef farms in North China and East China were relatively high. The management efficiency of North China was 0.928, which was the highest among the seven regions. The management efficiencies of Northeast China, Central China, Northwest China, Southwest China and North China were lower than the average(0.846). Except for Northwest China, the management efficiencies of the other four regions were mainly affected by the low scale efficiency.Years of education and industrial advantage had a significantly positive impact on management efficiency of medium-scale beef farms at 1% level.Labor input, medical and epidemic prevention, feed structure had significant negative impacts on management efficiency of medium-scale beef farms at 1% level; beef retail price index had significantly negative impacts on management efficiency of medium-scale beef farms at 5% level; age and breeding cycle had negative effects on management efficiency of medium-scale beef farms, but the effects were not significant. It is suggested that the management efficiency of large-scale beef farms should be improved through improving management methods, popularizing modern technology application and strengthening policy.
