Abstract:
In order to establish a rapid and accurate method for measuring sheep eye muscle area, one hundred and two 8-month-old intercrossed F2 lambs(Texel sheep×Altay sheep) were used as the research objects. The cross-sectional contour of the eye muscle was drawn on the sulfate paper. The planimeter method was used as the control group, the formula method(coefficient of formula method 1, 2 and 3 was 0.70, 0.73 and 0.79, respectively), weighing method and the digital image method established in this experiment were used as the treatment groups. The eye muscle area of lambs were measured with above method, and the mean value and the mean value of absolute value of difference value of the measurement results were compared, respectively, by using the correlation analysis of the methods. The results showed as follows: there were no significant difference in the eye muscle area between the treatment groups(formula method 3, weighing method and digital image method) and the control group(P>0.05), while the eye muscle area in the formula method 1 and formula method 2 groups was significantly lower than that in the control group(P<0.01). Compared with the control group, the difference in eye muscle area measured by the digital image method and weighing method were the smallest. The means of the absolute values of the differences between the eye muscle areas measured in the treatment group and the control group, in descending order, were for formula method 1>formula method 2> formula method 3> weighing method>digital image method.The eye muscle area measured by formula method, weighing method and digitat image method was significantly correlated with the planimeter method(P<0.01), and the order of correlation was digital image method > weighing method >formula method. In conclusion, the digital image method was a simple, rapid, accurate and reliable method for measuring sheep eye muscle area.
