Differentiated pathways of community participation in ecotourism driven by the culture of “Sacred Natural Sites”: a grounded study based on Pudacuo National Park

Abstract: "Sacred Natural Sites" represent a special entity within the protected area system of the Three Parallel Rivers region in Yunnan Province, possessing significant ecological and cultural value. Taking Pudacuo National Park as a case study and drawing on the perspectives of various stakeholders involved in the local community, this paper comprehensively applies qualitative research methods to analyze the impact of "Sacred Natural Sites" cultural embeddedness and the driving force of community participation. The study finds that: (1) Based on two factors—cultural embeddedness and the driving force of community participation—the modes and extents of residents' participation in ecotourism in Pudacuo National Park can be divided into four differentiated pathways: the "cultural identity" and "cultural resource", "cultural conflict and stagnation", and "cultural synergistic development" pathways. (2) Enhancing cultural embeddedness and the driving force of community participation can facilitate the upgrading and transformation from low-level coupling pathways to high-level coupling pathways, ultimately realizing the co-creation of community value.
